Deborah Togut z”l

On April 9, 2010, the Ramah community lost a longtime friend, former camper and counselor, Deborah Togut.  Deborah passed away at age 46 after a long, difficult struggle with brain cancer.  She served for many years as the Ritual Director of B'nai Israel Congregation in Rockville, MD.  Deborah spent ten summers at Camp Ramah in New England, developing her love for Judaism and fluency in Hebrew.

The thing I most remember about Deborah Togut was her participation at the camp Oneg Shabbat.  Sitting on the porch of the Camp director, a group of us would begin to sing songs from the Ramah Shiron.  All of us had books, of course, except for Deborah, who knew every word by heart!  How did she do it?  Did she spend the entire winter remembering the words?  It was very impressive.  I was at Deborah’s funeral and throughout the service I remembered her sweet voice, her dedication to Camp Ramah and her love of song.  She will be missed.  Paul Blank
