Today was Shoafim’s first Yom Meyuchad (special day) of the summer, Yom B’nai Mitzvah!! Most of our hanichim are preparing for their own B’nai Mitzvot, so today was a fun way to get them excited about this milestone in their lives. Morning activities included learning how to give a firm handshake, and practicing delivering a speech using the lyrics of some of their favorite pop songs. Their madrichim coached them on how to speak slowly, make eye contact with the audience, and to always open and close with “Shabbat Shalom!”
The hanichim then split up into groups and worked on creating a Dvar Torah in the form of a rap! Topics ranged from honoring your mother and father, to giving tzedakah (charity). They performed them for the entire edah.
They learned how to wrap tefillin, a mitzvah of B’nai Mitzvah, using Fruit by the Foot candy!
Towards the end of the day, in preparation for the many thank you notes they will have to write to their B’nai Mitzvah teachers and guests, they wrote notes to people in camp who work so hard to make the summer happen, such as the year round staff and the kitchen staff!
Of course there was no better way to end the day than with a big mesibat B’nai Mitzvah (B’nai Mitzvah party) for peulat erev (evening activity)! The hanichim came dressed to impress, and we played B’nai Mitzvah games such as “Coke and Pepsi” and danced the night away together!
