Chag Urim Sameach! (Happy Festival of Lights)

As you may know, Solelim’s additional summer programming theme is the Jewish Holidays– we’re celebrating the whole calendar year in 8 weeks. First session, we did bedikat chameitz for Nikayon, celebrated a Seder for Passover, had a Lag Ba’Omer Medura, observed Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut, received the Torah on Shavuot, and cast our sins into the agam for Rosh Hashanah. We also observed 9 Av with the rest of camp :-).

This session we jumped right in with the holiday of Sukkot by doing some programming about appreciating the bounty that God has given us and by sitting in an Ohel and pretending it was a Sukkah. For Simchat Torah, we did a relay race program with each part of the race connected to a different part of the Torah so the kids traveled through the entire Torah. This week we have been observing Hanukkah! We lit the Chanukiya for the first candle on Thursday night at our medura, and last night we lit the eighth. We’ve been singing Chanukah songs and telling the Chanukah story. We dressed up in togas on Sunday morning, and had sufganiyot at the end of tefilot today. Before Shabbat, every Solelimer wrote a Secret Maccabee Shabbat-o-gram to another person in the edah. We look forward to celebrating Tu Bishvat and Purim over the next weeks.
