Pickling with Shoafim “It’s a Good Life” Chug!

This afternoon, our Shoafimers in the “It’s a Good Life” chug gathered for an exciting adventure in pickling!

Master Pickler (and Rosh Kochavim) Sarah Binney came to teach the kids all about fermented pickling, and then we got to try it ourselves!

The kids divided into pairs.  Each pair got a jar and at least one cucumber (they could take more if they wanted).  The kids could then choose from an array of other vegetables to pickle, including green beans, carrots, cauliflower, and onions, which they added to their jar.  Then they could choose from an array of spices to add to their jar… and then we added the brine (which was a simple saltwater mixture).

The kids then sealed their jars and labeled them with the name of their pickling company.  We’ll let the jars sit for the next few days, and then next week (we hope on Monday, but we’ll wait to see when Master Pickler Sarah says they’re ready) we will enjoy the fruits (vegetables) of our labor!
