Spotlight: Hava (farm) and Limud (education)

Rabbi Joshua Ackerman of our Tzevet Limud (education staff) was seen huddled under a blue tarp at the Hava this morning, together with the 2 goats and a group of our Kochavim and Ilanot chanichim (campers), leading a Chug Limud (education session).  They were cozy and dry despite the rain.

He read the story of Honi haMaagal in which Honi sees an old man planting a tree.  Honi scoffs at him, saying “Old man! Why are you planting that silly tree when you will not get to reap the benefit of its fruit?” Suddenly Honi falls asleep and wakes up 70 years later.  He sees someone harvesting the fruit — who looks just like the old man.  Confused and disoriented, Honi asks incredulously “Are you the same old man who planted that tree?” — after all, how could that old man have lived another 70 years? The man who was harvesting the fruit said “No, I am his grandson”.  Through this story, the chanichim learned the value of planting trees for the benefit of future generations, and about the need for an awareness of environmental sustainability.

You will all be happy to know that the Limud department held a camp-wide Israel Trivia competition.  The winners got to choose the names for our Hava chickens.  The good-spirited competition was engaging and right along the lines of our camp-wide theme for this summer:  עין לציון.  Drum roll…the 4 winning names for our chickens are:  Potato; Spicy Bunny; Crazy Smarts; and Golden Goat! And never fear — please feel free to take the Israel trivia test yourself (see entire text, below) and think of your winning chicken name.

Rabbi Ackerman comments, “I have been consistently impressed and happy to see how all our chanichim are taking care of relating to our Hava animals.  They are without exception gentle, caring, and enthusiastic about taking proper care of these animals.  For example, many make a point to come during bechira (free time) to visit, clean, and take walks with the goats.  This Hava initiative has been overwhelmingly positive.”

The Israel trivia contest: reprinted in full, below.  See if you would score high enough to win, and if so…what would you name your chicken?
