Spotlight On: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Shacharit

The Alternative Tefillah entitled “Ruth Bader Ginsburg Shacharit”, led by Rachel Coll this past Friday, connected with our theme for this Kayitz (summer).   Our theme is Emet (Truth), and this Tefillah centered around the theme “You can’t spell truth without Ruth!”  Rachel chose 12 famous quotes of RBG, and chanichim (campers) each picked the one that they liked the best and/or connected the most with.  Each participant then had the opportunity to explain to the group why they picked that quote.  Finally, the group as a whole discussed situations around our machaneh (camp) where each quote could be applied.  You can try this at home too!

Quotes:

My mother told me to be a lady. And for her, that meant be your own person, be independent.

I think daughters can change the perception of their fathers.

Women will only have true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.

“I’m a very strong believer in listening and learning from others.”

“The state controlling a woman would mean denying her full autonomy and full equality.”

So that’s the dissenter’s hope: that they are writing not for today but for tomorrow.

“You can disagree without being disagreeable”.

“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.”

“If you want to be a true professional, do something outside yourself.”

“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”

“It is not a women’s liberation, it is a women’s and men’s liberation.”

“When I’m sometimes asked when will there be enough [women on the Supreme Court] and I say, ‘When there are nine,’ people are shocked. But there’d been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.”
