Getting to Work with Voc Ed and Voc Ed Ma’avar

Two people wearing blue gloves smile and give thumbs up in a kitchen. One wears an Adidas shirt and orange cap; the other has sunglasses and a red bandana. Waffles and boxes are on the counter nearby.

One of the proudest gems of our camp community is our Tikvah program, now a model of inclusive camping throughout the camping industry. Within the Tikvah program, our Vocational Education (Voc Ed) and Voc Ed Ma’avar programs offer participants opportunities for independent living skills and professional skills training and support.

Participants in Voc Ed and Voc Ed Ma’avar get the best of both worlds here at Ramah, spending half of the day enjoying the full camp experience and the other half of the day working in various jobs that are pivotal to the camp operation and infrastructure. This summer, participants in Voc Ed and Voc Ed Ma’avar are working hard around camp setting up our chadar ochel (dining hall) for lunch, sorting and delivering mail and lost and found, working with our kitchen staff to prepare meals for all the chanichim (campers), and assembling daily snack for all the the tzrifim (bunks).

Three people sit at a table sorting and stapling papers in an office with wood-paneled walls, a window, water bottle, and office supplies on the table. Electronics and wiring are visible on the wall in the background.Six people stand outside near a red building, holding large cardboard boxes and smiling at the camera. They appear to be volunteering or working together, with some wearing gloves and hats.

We also re-opened the Voc Ed Bakery, serving up yummy muffins and cakes for birthday celebrations around camp.

Four people wearing name badges stand in a kitchen behind a counter with freshly baked muffins and green apples. They are smiling and appear to be enjoying a group baking activity.

Our Voc Ed and Voc Ed Ma’avar participants are practicing job skills, learning independence, and supporting fundamental components of our camp operation that rely on our Tikvah participants for their service and hard work.

A woman with brown hair in a ponytail, wearing a light blue shirt, holds several metal spoons and gestures while sorting a large bin full of spoons in a spacious cafeteria-style room.

In the afternoons, our Voc Ed and Voc Ed Ma’avar participants enjoy the variety of camp programming: swimming, art, Jewish learning and music, and even working with the animals on our farm.

We are excited for another month of learning, working, and growing in Tikvah!
