Yoav After, a long-time member of our mishlachat (our delegation of Israeli staff) reports:

Last week at camp, we celebrated Yom Yisrael with energy, excitement, and plenty of Israeli spirit! Throughout the day, chanichim (campers) sang and danced to Israeli music, bringing the sounds of Israel to every corner of camp. Across all our programs and activity areas, campers enjoyed special Israel-themed activities that highlighted different aspects of Israeli culture, creativity, and community.

The day was filled with laughter, learning, and a strong sense of connection to Israel, creating memorable experiences for campers of all ages.

Then, this past Shabbat, our Magshimim and Nivonim campers had the opportunity to explore one of the most fascinating aspects of Israel: the incredible diversity that makes up Israeli society.

Through engaging discussions and activities, the chanichim learned about the many communities, traditions, and cultures that have come together to shape the State of Israel. They explored how people from different parts of the world brought their languages, customs, foods, and stories with them, creating the vibrant tapestry of Israeli life that exists today. The program encouraged campers to think about Israel not only as a homeland, but also as a meeting place of many unique identities and experiences.

The highlight of the program was hearing directly from members of our mishlachat (our Israeli delegation). In small kvutzot (groups), shlichim shared their personal family stories, tracing their roots through different communities and generations. Campers listened as each story revealed a different perspective on what it means to be Israeli, while also discovering the common threads that connect people across backgrounds and traditions.

These conversations sparked thoughtful questions, meaningful connections, and a deeper appreciation for the richness of Israeli society. By learning about the journeys and identities of the people around them, campers gained a more personal understanding of Israel and the many voices that help tell its story.
