Community Report 2022
Shalom!
This community report is created with our profound appreciation for everyone who made it possible for our campers and staff members to have a joyful and fun-filled kayitz (summer) 2022. Ramah New England welcomed 1,300 campers and hundreds of staff members to Camp Ramah New England (Palmer), Ramah Day Camp Greater DC, and the inaugural week of Ramah Day Camp Greater Boston. Each day at our camps was filled with exceptional moments of personal growth, friendship, and immersion in Jewish life.
Kayitz 2022 delivered life-changing experiences that were shaped by:
- Rebuilding: Campers expanded their horizons and strengthened their skills through reinvigorated programs.
- Leading: Older campers and young staff members discovered their talents for leading and served as exemplary role models.
- Experiencing: Campers and staff members forged strong Jewish identities and powerful joyful communities.
Todah Rabbah – thank you for entrusting Ramah New England with your children and investing in a strong future for Ramah. Thank you for partnering with us to inspire a lifelong love of Jewish traditions and values within welcoming and accepting communities.
Elizabeth Waksman, President
Rabbi Ed Gelb, CEO
Campers gained confidence and independence through reinvigorated programs. Our campers also benefited from wonderful new additions to our sites.
While 2021 was a summer of happiness and healing for our campers and staff, we recognized the need to rebuild many of our programs – and with this, to teach and reinforce skills that had atrophied early in the pandemic. In 2022, Ramah made great strides to revitalize its programs to strengthen skill-building and Jewish learning. Our camps returned to full enrollment, with richer programs that permeated every aspect of camp life. Additions to our Palmer and DC sites also enhanced our campers’ experiences.
At our overnight camp, our program again reached high levels with the return of Yom Roo, swim lessons and Kishroniyah, a one-week program of workshops for our older campers. With several additional top-notch staff members, campers had more ways to delve into the arts, deepen their connection to our natural world, and acquire new sports skills, including pickleball! And a gorgeous new Biytan (pavilion), funded by Kimby and Lawrence Berger, provided a fantastic new location for camper activities, from tefilot through peulat erev (evening activity).
At our DC Day Camp, with the return of chugim (electives), campers had more opportunities to choose activities to match their interests, expand their horizons and reinforce their skill sets. Some chugim were even conducted in Hebrew! Har Ramah (Ramah mountain), the new climbing tower, spurred campers to take on new and unexpected challenges. And the return of the Zimkudiyah (song and dance festival) let campers learn new songs and dances to celebrate Ahavat HaAdamah (loving the earth).
The strong enrollment and dynamic programming at both camps paved the way for the launch of the Boston Day Camp. Forty-five campers had a sensational time during the one-week pilot. In 2023, we will fully launch this camp with a 6-week well-rounded schedule hosted at Gann Academy in Waltham, MA.
Our teens and young adults excelled in leading our campers.
Ramah has made an enduring commitment to the development of the next generation of Jewish leaders. Our camps are laboratories for our teens and young adults, who participate in summer-long training and learn by leading our campers. Through this process, they become exemplary role models who campers seek to emulate. They also discover their own passions and talents for leading.
Leadership training begins in earnest with Camp Ramah New England’s older campers, who are empowered to create their own experiences and transmit the Ramah experience to younger campers and Amitzim (teen campers with disabilities). Through “Ma Ramah” (What is Ramah?), Machon campers (rising 10th graders) explored Ramah’s distinctive characteristics and worked closely with younger campers. Nivonim campers (rising 11th graders) assumed significant responsibilities through Hadracha, the summer-long leadership training program. They served as Madrichim (Counselors)-in-training several days a week and led two hours of programming for younger campers once a week. They also ran major camp-wide events, including Friday night shira (singing) and Yom Sport.
Our young alumni, joined by other staff members from Israel and elsewhere, delivered spectacular experiences at all three camps in kayitz 2022. Our staff members’ impact rested on extensive staff training, which began with pre-season workshops and continued through staff week (just before the campers arrived) and the entire summer. These training sessions, led by seasoned educators, added to counselors’ skills in the bunk, at tefilot, and as chug (elective) educators. Ramah also continued to support its staff members by providing “go-to” people for staff members who needed coaching, convening the Palmer Staff Life Committee that served as a sounding board for staff members, and providing coffee, late-night snacks, swag and other occasional goodies.
Ramah’s investment in its staff members is central to their personal growth and well-being and yields a high staff retention rate. This investment is also central to our campers’ happiness. As we sometimes say simply: happy staff members = happy campers!
By experiencing and living Judaism, campers forged deeper personal identities and powerful communities.
Ramah succeeds by imbuing every aspect of camp – from tefilot in the morning to bedtime routines in the evening – with Jewish values and practices. In kayitz 2022, many Jewish experiences, both old and new, filled our camps with joyous Jewish exploration.
At Camp Ramah New England, all-camp havdalah in the Horshah (grove) again became a regular highlight of the summer. There’s nothing more uplifting than everyone standing arm-in-arm for this moving Jewish ritual, capped off by the spirited singing of our camp song, “Tov Li B’Machaneh Ramah“ – how good it is for me at Camp Ramah! Another stirring spiritual moment occurred when everyone gathered outside at dusk for a mournful reading of Eichah on erev Tisha B’Av. A new color-coded siddur designed by our senior leadership, which highlights key words and provides easy-to-follow transliterations and translations alongside the Hebrew, is improving the younger campers’ participation in and understanding of tefilot.
The spirit of Jewish growth and inquiry also infused daily life at our day camps. Our DC Day Camp was the perfect place to learn about Ahavat HaAdamah (loving the earth), the summer theme chosen to mark the shmitah, the sabbatical year for the land. The campers not only recycled and tended the large permaculture garden, but they also watched as a small corner of land was left to rest, as is customary in the shmitah year. And at both day camps, our campers delighted in ruach-filled Jewish shira and rikud (song and dance), especially when it was time to welcome Shabbat.
